Dehydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the diffuse interstellar medium

چکیده
We present a model for the hydrogenation states of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the diffuse interstellar medium. First, we study the abundance of hydrogenation and charge states of PAHs due to photo-ionization, photodissociation in the interstellar UV field, electron recombination and chemical reactions between PAH cations and H or H2. For PAH cations, we find that the dehydrogenation effects are dominant. The hydrogenation state of PAHs depends strongly on the H density, the size of molecule and UV field. In diffuse clouds with low H density and normal UV radiation, PAHs containing less than 40 C are completely or strongly dehydrogenated whereas at high H density, they are normally hydrogenated. The partially dehydrogenated species dominate in intermediate density clouds. PAHs above 40 C are quite stable and are fully hydrogenated, which would favor their spectroscopic search in near IR surveys of Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs).

The optical spectrum of a large isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: hexa-peri -hexabenzocoronene, C42H18
The first optical spectrum of an isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon large enough to survive the photophysical conditions of the interstellar medium is reported. Vibronic bands of the first electronic transition of the all benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon hexa-peri -hexabenzocoronene were observed in the 4080 − 4530 Å range by resonant 2-color 2-photon ionization spectroscopy. The...

Planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are candidates for the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) carriers. Nanometer-size Fe metallic particles, expected to be present during astrophysical graphite growth, are catalytic for formation of a related species—large tubular PAH molecules. We propose that tubular PAH molecules are a component of the interstellar medium. Electronic structure calcu...
متن کاملDipole Bound Excited States of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons containing Nitrogen and their Relation to the Interstellar Medium
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most abundant type of molecule present in the interstellar medium (ISM). It has been hypothesized that nitrogen replacement within a ring is likely for PAHs present in the ISM. Additionally, electrons, protons, and hydrogen atoms are readily added to or removed from PAHs creating a truly diverse set of chemistries in various interstellar regions. ...

We discuss the proposal relating the origin of some of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) to neutral and ionized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in interstellar clouds. Laboratory spectra of several PAHs, isolated at low temperature in inert gas matrices, are compared with the spectra of five reddened early-type stars selected from an extensive set of astronomical spectra. Long-slit 8-13 micrometers spectroscopy of the nebula around NGC 1333 SVS 3 reveals spatial variations in the strength and shape of emission features that are probably produced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Close to SVS 3, the 11.2 micrometers feature develops an excess at approximately 10.8-11.0 micrometers and a feature appears at approximately 10 micrometers. These features dis...
